Stone Circles
Between Wassau and Kau-Ur are the mysterious stone circles. These circles are still an anthropological and archaeological mystery. Experts think the stone circles are the only remaining evidence of a former unknown African civilization. The circles are reminiscent of Stonehenge in Scotland but experts are not sure whether the patterns of the circles also have something to do with the path of the sun.
There are no archaeological excavations carried out, partly because the village leaders (Alkalo’s) are convinced a curse will descend if the sacred circles are disturbed. But a visit certainly won’t hurt and it would be a waste to one of the greatest wonders of dark Africa not to visit.
Ask your GambiaSafari.eu guide to combine the visit of the Stone Circles with for example, JanJan Bureh (Georgetown) and/or Basse Santa Su.
